Ask for the promotion instead of waiting to be given it
There's a decision made about you in a room you're never in, usually once or twice a year, on a date fixed months in advance. Nobody in that room remembers the Tuesday you rebuilt the reporting dashboard from scratch. That's why career coaches keep saying the same unglamorous thing: put it on one page, with numbers — the deal you closed, the process you cut from four days to one — and get it to your manager before the meeting, not mid-sentence during it. Then say the actual title out loud, 'senior analyst,' because 'more responsibility' isn't a sentence anyone can act on.
Practical
- Cost
- free
- Best time
- A few weeks before your company's fixed annual or biannual review window
- Difficulty
- Moderate
- Time it takes
- An hour or two to write; sent days before the review meeting
- What people get wrong
- People bring their case to the meeting itself instead of sending it beforehand, and they list duties and effort rather than measurable outcomes. The bigger mistake is asking for 'more responsibility' instead of naming the exact title they want.
