Stand inside the Great Pyramid's King's Chamber

The queue at the ticket booth splits in two: one line for general entry, another—pricier—for the climb into the pyramid itself. Stooped almost double, you shuffle up the Grand Gallery's narrow passage, sweat pooling before you reach the King's Chamber, the only one of Giza's three pyramids where this passage and chamber exist at all. Inside sits a granite sarcophagus, empty, lid long gone, its corners chipped by nineteenth-century souvenir hunters. The blocks around you weigh eighty tonnes apiece, hauled without wheels, without pulleys anyone has fully explained.

What people get wrong
People assume the King's Chamber ticket is bundled with general admission or bookable online — it isn't, and it's sold in limited numbers on site each morning. They also underestimate the crouched climb and the heat, which catches out anyone mildly claustrophobic.

    The first gate is not what you expect: vermillion paint still tacky at the edges, and beneath it, stencilled in white, the name of a noodle company you have never heard of.
