The Life List

Nature

Spend a night in the Sahara with no tent

The sand is still warm from the afternoon when you lie down at Erg Chebbi, heat radiating up through the blanket like an echo of the day's 40°C sun. By 3am it's gone, and you're wearing every layer you own against a cold that flirts with freezing, under a sky so dense with stars it looks unfinished, as if someone forgot to leave gaps. Guides from Merzouga usually walk the camp out by camel at dusk, past ridges where some other group's fire is glowing. You sleep with sand in your ears and wake stiff, the sun already flattening the dunes back to gold.

What people get wrong

Also this

  • Run the Marathon des Sables

The stage lengths are printed on a card you get the night before, and the jump from 30km to 80-plus km never stops feeling unfair.

Best time:April, before the Sahara heat becomes extreme

  • Paddle through water that glows with every stroke

The water at the dock is black, and the guide dips a paddle in first, watching for the glow before anyone launches.

Best time:Moonless nights, any time of year

  • Spend a night alone in a fire lookout tower

The stove is small enough to heat with one armful of wood, and by dusk the windows go dark orange with the sunset instead of black, because you are above the treeline on all four sides at once.

Best time:Summer, when fire-season access roads and trails are clear

  • Walk on a glacier in crampons

Meltwater moves under Vatnajökull in channels you can hear but never see, a low gurgle beneath boots that only picked up their first pair of crampons an hour ago.

Best time:Year-round, though May–September gives easier access and longer light

  • Sleep in a bothy

The grid reference sits in pencil on a paper map, six digits leading to a stone hut with no chimney smoke.

Best time:Late spring to early autumn; winter needs hillwalking experience
