Sit on the bench where Forrest Gump waited with his box of chocolates

Chippewa Square is a quiet square with live oaks and Spanish moss, and every year a few visitors wander in looking for a bench that was never really there. It was a prop, built for a few weeks of filming in 1994 and gone soon after. The square itself costs nothing and takes ten minutes to walk. What people actually want is a mile away, in the lobby of the Savannah History Museum, where a replica bench sits under fluorescent light. You pay the admission, then sit and hold an invisible box of chocolates, same as everyone before you.

    At 5:30 in the morning the stone steps are still wet and there's no one else on the trail, just your headlamp and the sound of your own breathing at 2,700 metres.

    Best time:Dry season, May to September, for the best odds of clear skies
